RED, a California-based cinema camera company, has announced that it’s not just simplifying its product lineup but also dropping prices on all of its cameras. RED’s product lineup has been simplified to just three cameras: the DSMC2 Monster, the DSMC2 Helium, and the DSMC2 Gemini.
RED’s modular system has enabled many users to enter and grow within the more professional and more versatile product portfolio. However, to stay on track, RED ‘s CEO Jarred Land decided to simplify the portfolio a bit and offer only three camera models based on the DSMC2 body.
RED: “We simplified our portfolio, found efficiencies, and are passing along the benefits to our users. The full potential of the DSMC2 BRAIN is available to all—just choose your sensor based on the resolution and optical format you need.”
The MONSTRO is equivalent to the specifications of the WEAPON MONSTRO 8K VV, is available in aluminum and carbon fiber versions and has been priced at 54.550 euros. The HELIUM is based on the WEAPON HELIUM 8K S35, also available as an aluminum version and for a price of just 24.950 euros which is only half of what it used to cost. In addition, the HELIUM 8K S35 sensor is also available as a monochrome version for the same price. The GEMINI in turn is in terms of data rate and REDCODE settings a refreshed version of the EPIC-W 5K S35 GEMINI that got released last spring and is offered for 19.500 euros.
The camera’s body is the primary building block of the RED system, housing the image sensor and advanced computing components. The DSMC2 body is capable of data write speeds of 300 MB/s, can simultaneously record in REDCODE RAW and Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR/HD, and is offered with three sensor options – delivering incredible dynamic range and up to 8K resolution. With features like cable-free peripherals, integrated media bay, wireless control, DSMC2 is the most powerful and intuitive camera to date. It is also compatible with a growing arsenal of modules and accessories—from RED and other Third-Party manufacturers.
